The Advent season at Henrietta UMC begins lighting of the first purple candle of the Advent wreath, which reminds of the hope of a Messiah prophesied by the Old Testament prophets.  The second week the next purple candle, known as the Candle of the Way is lit to remind us that Christ was sent by God as the light to show seekers in a sin-darkened world the way back home.  The third week the final purple candle is lit as a symbol of the joy one experiences when reconciled with the heavenly Father.  The Sunday before Christmas the pink candle of peace is lit to remind us that Christ enables us to make peace with God so we can know the peace of God.  The final candle lit is the white Christ candle, which sits in the center of the Advent wreath to remind us that Christ’s birth is the center of the Christmas story and the beginning of the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises concerning God’s plan of salvation.
