Meet Older Adult Ministries Coordinator

Carol Schmitkons

Carol is the wife of Jim, mother of Aaron and proud grandmother of four-year old, Georgia Rose and five-month old, Lucas William.  She lives on Jim’s family’s fruit farm and loves all types of gardening, crocheting and reading when she’s not at work directing the Amherst Township Senior Service Office.  Carol is a certified Medicare counselor with the Ohio Department of Insurance’s Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program and also serves as the Lorain County coordinator for that program.
Carol has been active in many phases of church work over the years.  She has worked with children and youth in Sunday School, Methodist Youth Fellowship, Confirmation, Vacation Bible School, and the Pioneer Girls Program and has served on the Parent Teacher Fellowship and School Board of Open Door Christian Schools.  She has also taught adult Sunday School classes and led ladies Bible study discussion groups as well as discipleship, care, and community groups.  Carol has been a member-at-large on the church board and is lay delegate to annual conference.  She also has been on the conference Older Adult Ministries Task Force and is currently working with the conference Church & Society Committee on health issues faced by the elderly.

Carol’s real passion, working with older adults, began with her job, but led to her being called into older adult ministry.  She completed coursework for professional certification in older adult ministry at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC in the spring of 2009 and received her certification at annual conference in June 2010.
